Street Racer
A USX region 1 DVD review by Craig Snell

With possibly the best name in films this year, Johnny Wayne (Clint Browning) has been released from prison after crashing his car and disabling a young boy. He meets his probation officer, who gives him a job in the local garage/scrap yard ran by old timer, Red. His probation officer, being a rather unpleasant corrupt chap, forces Johnny back into illegal street racing to make himself some dollars.

Part of Johnny’s probation is working being a janitor at a clinic. This clinic just happens to be where the young boy disabled by Johnny’s crash is undergoing physiotherapy. So not only do we have a Street Racing story we have some human drama, complete with redemption for the main character.

Made obviously very fast and with a limited budget, Street Racer is quite a departure from usual Asylum fare and is more along the scope of a Fast and Furious film or teen picture. We get some car races, the aforementioned story surrounding the disabled boy and quite possibly the most evil corrupt probation officer I have seen in a film ever. Actor Michael Crider plays the probation officer Griggs in such a twisted way you immediately hate him and believe he is a real nasty piece of work. A lot of villains you love, but this guy is simply a total 'you know what'.

The film is written by the two sons of Barry Van Dyke, son of the legendary Dick Van Dyke. Forget Mark Poppins, these two guys' Dad and Granddad starred in Diagnosis Murder. The cast do an admirable job in what is a fairly unoriginal and predictable film, and is it just me or does main lead, Clint Browning, look like a young Johnny Depp?

SOUND AND VISION

Presented in a full widescreen scope picture, Street Racer has an excellent picture with good skin tones and attractive colours particularly on the cars. Once again shot using HD cameras, the film features some nice camera angles, considering it was made quickly.

Sound is a 5.1 mix, which is a little disappointing considering the opportunity to have cars racing around the surrounds. However, dialogue is clear and the front left and right channels are used well with lots of nice bass from the LFE.

EXTRA FEATURES

Behind the Wheel: The Making of Street Racer
A short featurette featuring an enlightening insight into the making of the film. Titbits include the use of local car clubs to make the film realistic.

Blooper Reel
Very funny, priceless footage of emergency vehicle sirens and drive-thru intercoms stopping filming.

Trailers of Street Racer, 100 Million BC, Allan Quatermain, 2012 Doomsday and War of the Worlds 2.

SUMMARY

Not quite The Fast and the Furious, more of a human drama with fast cars and swearing. Some pretty good racing scenes considering its low budget and quickness of production, the film passes "The Mum Test". This means my parents watched it and quite enjoyed it. A recommendation in itself.
