SherryBaby in December
15 October 2007
Every now and again a film comes along that gets recommended almost solely on the basis of its central performance. This doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with the film itself, but it's that star turn that makes it a must-see. Such has been the case regarding Maggie Gyllenhaal's performance as in Laurie Collyer's 2006 drama SherryBaby, which has been announced for a December UK DVD release.
Three years after entering prison for robbery as a 19-year old heroin addict, Sherry Swanson (Maggie Gyllenhaal) begins her first day of freedom, clean and sober. A model prisoner who has undergone personal transformation, she immediately sets out to regain custody of her young daughter Alexis, who has been cared for by her brother Bobby and his wife Lynn. Unprepared for the demands of the world she's stepped back into, Sherry's hopes of staying clean, getting a job, and becoming a responsible mother are challenged by the realities of life. Disillusioned and haunted by wounds from her childhood, Sherry is confronted with life-altering questions about her own survival and what it means to be a good mother. Ultimately she learns it's best to take one small step at a time.
SherryBaby will be released on DVD in the UK on December 26th 2007 by Metrodome. Special features will include:
- Interview with Maggie Gyllenhaal;
- Interview with Danny Trejo Grindhouse, Sin City 2);
- Textual Q&A with Laurie Collyer.
