Richard Linklater's 1991 Slacker is one of those movies that really did deserve to launch the career of its director for three good reasons. Firstly Linklater made a virtue of his low budget and made thesort of film that no studio would even think of attempting. Secondly it was smart when its characters could easily be taken for dumb. Thirdly, it's a fine, fine movie that all budding directors should learn from. Linklater's film is largely narrative free, a drift through coffee houses, clubs, bars, apartments, stores, and streets of the college town of Austin, Texas, eavesdropping on the conversations of people who are going nowhere, and sure like to talk about it.
Already available in the US as part of The Criterion Collection in a feature crammed 2-disc special edition, the film is finally on its way on UK DVD in December from Metrodome. Unfortunately at this stage we know no more than that and are still awaiting confirmation on details of special features, if there are to be any. The story will be updated as soon as we have more information.
What we do know is that the DVD will be released by Metrodome on 26th December 2007 at the RRP of £17.99. |
