One of those rare Hollywood blockbusters that has also achieved cult status, Steven Spielberg's 1977 science fiction epic Close Encounters of the Third Kind has now appeared in three incarnations, the 1977 original theatrical edition, the 1980 theatrical special edition and the 1998 Director’s Cut. Now Sony have announced a 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition containing all three versions of the film on both DVD and high definition Blu-ray disc, the first Steven Spielberg film to be released on a high definition format. Here's the press release version:
Marking the first time ever that all three versions of Close Encounters of the Third Kind are available in one package, the 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition serves up a treat for fans of this classic film.
The Blu-ray edition, Steven Spielberg's first ever high definition release, will contain all three films on one 50GB disc. Through a process called 'seamless branching', Blu-ray’s software identifies the differences between each version of the film and segments the footage accordingly. Extras include a new interview with Steven Spielberg, a new production scrapbook and a 90-minute making of documentary.
The DVD box set, spread across three discs, contains all three films and all the bonus material found on the Blu-ray release.
If you don't know the film then where the hell have you been? It remains one of the only major motion pictures to take the concept of alien visitation seriously (not that this is necessarily a good thing, of course...), focussing on working man Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss), whose close encounter with an alien scout ship infects him with an obsession that breaks up his family and leads him to a mountain in Wyoming, where the first official contact with alien life has been arranged to take place.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 30th Anniversary Special Edition will be released on UK DVD as a deluxe 3-disc set and Blu-ray as a deluxe 2-disc set on 3rd December 2007, both at the RRP of £22.99. Both sets will have the following special features:
- New production scrapbook and timeline;
- New interview with Steven Spielberg;
- 90-minute making-of documentary;
- Watch the Skies featurette;
- Storyboard Comparisons;
- Deleted Scenes.
