Described by Variety as "an enjoyable anarchic love-letter to the never say die spirit of Cuba, and to music as a way of life," Havana Blues, or more accurately Habana Blues, tells the story of Ruy and Tito, two young musicians who dream of escaping Havana and hitting the big time with their band. Tito lives with his wily grandmother Luz Maria who records her famed vocals in return for shots of vodka. Ruy lives with his hard working wife and two children but this doesn’t stop him from charming his way into the bed of hot-shot Spanish producer Martha. While in rehearsals for their first big concert, Ruy and Tito discover that Martha and side-kick Lorenzo are looking for new talent in Cuba. Facing the chance of a lifetime, Ruy and Tito have some big decisions to make.
Strangely, Havana Blues has struggled to get a cinema release in the UK or, research suggests, the US, so the upcoming UK DVD release from Soda Pictures is particularly welcome. We've yet to confirm the screen ratio or if there are any extra features on board, but a Spanish 5.1 soundtrack does look on the cards.
Havana Blues will be released on UK DVD by Soda Pictures on 28th January 2008 at the RRP of £19.99. |
