Shutter 2-disc Special Edition in January

11 December 2007

It's the sort of film that could all too easily get passed over by discerning horror fans, another in a long line of increasingly derivative horrors from the Far East, and one that borrows liberally from earlier genre successes. But don't let that dissuade you - the Thai made Shutter may ring some familiar bells, but it's still one of the creepiest horror movies to hits these shores in recent years, and one that genre devotees owe it to themselves to catch before its memory is sullied by the inevitable upcoming US remake starring Joshua Jackson (Cursed, Dawson's Creek) and Rachael Taylor (Transformers, See No Evil).

Driving home from a drinking party, photographer Tun and his girlfriend Jane accidentally knock down a teenage girl. But rather than going to the victim's aid, Tun convinces Jane to leave the scene of the accident. In the days following the incident, bizarre ghostly images begin to appear on photographs taken by Tun. Investigations into the cause of this mysterious phenomenon lead Tun and Jane to a girl from Tun's past and a very dark and deeply disturbing secret.

Atmospheric, smartly executed and boasting a share of very effective sudden scares, Shutter builds to a particularly fine final 20 minutes and a haunting final image that is very much all this film's own. It's a film that has put co-directors Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom on the map, and built expectations for their follow-up feature, Alone.

Shutter was surprisingly late in reaching UK cinemas, only getting a release last year, by when it had already made it to US DVD. The wait for a UK DVD may well have been worth it, as when it arrives in January, courtesy of Premier Asia, it does so as a 2-disc Special Edition with over two hours of special features. Offering a choice of 5.1 and DTS surround Thai language tracks and optional English subtitles, the release also contains the following extra features:

  • Cast and director on-screen commentary;
  • Promotional gallery (including original trailer, original teaser, UK theatrical trailer the three original TV spots);
  • The Making of Shutter featurette;
  • Production notes (including undeveloped scenes, production sketches, photo gallery, Ghosts in the Machine photo gallery, storyboard to screen comparisons and alternative scenes).

The 2-disc Special Edition of Shutter will be released on UK DVD by Premier Asia on 14th January 2008 at the RRP of £19.99.
